Sounds of Nature

Most people know that photographs contain various color tones. But can they also contain musical tones?

When you are in nature, you are surrounded by sounds, from the wind in the leaves, birds in the forest, to waves on the beach. But can a visual motif represent a piece of music?

If you ask AI, the answer is yes. There are several AI generators that, through intricate models, convert an image file into an audio file by analyzing the colors, brightness, shapes, and textures in the image. I have tested a few of them and I’m not impressed. The two photographs you see in this post were uploaded, and the result that came back most resembled a fart in the wind. I thought I had quite helped the AI generator by feeding it with an image that visually reflected a sound file. But alas, the technology was not very useful. The only way these images can actually be turned into sound or music is probably by having a real musician interpret them, just as great composers have always done. Just think of “The Four Seasons” by Vivaldi, “Silent Woods” by Dvořák, and “The Blue Danube” by Strauss.

My little experiment thus ends with the following result: AI composer algorithms 0, classical composer skills 1.
