Play and Impulses

When a poet plays with words, and a musician with tones and harmonies, they experiment within their art form with new ways of expressing themselves. These words are not new, nor are the tones of the instrument. They are familiar elements that the artist combines in new ways.

On my countless walks in the forest, one might think that I had seen and photographed everything that could be photographed. However, the possibilities for new combinations of familiar elements are endless. With a playful and experimental approach, I place the camera to my eye, press the shutter, and see what happens. Often, I get ideas along the way, leading to new concepts. I rarely have a plan in advance. Often, I don’t even know which part of the forest I want to explore. I let new impressions and quirky ideas guide the way. If you were to track my movements in the forest via GPS, you would see a particularly winding and irrational route, as if only an intoxicated person could have walked it. I am quite sober and simply follow my intuition, inspiration, and impulses.
