In 2011, I moved with my family to Værløse from Copenhagen and settled in at close proximity to Værløse Air Base. A couple of years earlier, the site had transitioned from an active military airbase to a recreational area for the public. However, since 2013, the site has hosted an annual air show, also known as Store Flyvedag (Big Flying Day).
There’s no doubt when the day of the air parade arrives, as the old aircrafts thunder over the rooftops in the neighborhood. Every year, we say to each other that we really should go and check it out, after all, it’s only 2 kilometers away. It just happened to take 11 years before we actually did it!
But what an experience it was. It’s a wild show featuring displays of historic aircraft, agile planes in formation flying, and acrobatic gliders. We enjoyed a couple of hours of entertainment looking up. All the pictures were taken with a 200 mm lens and with both feet firmly planted on the ground.
Thus, we got a taste of our local air show, and I’m sure we’ll be back next year for more.
